The award stood on the mantel. Pride of place for two weeks in a row. “Quit staring at it, Johnny! No one blames ye for havin’ it,” Shelly said, pouring drinks.
“I blame me, Shell. This could be keepin’ someone else safe tonight. We don’t really need do we?”
“Here,” she said, thrusting a drink into his hands. “Drink this. It’ll calm ye nerves. Just remember ye savin’ more than just yer pretty face, Johnny.”
The clock on the mantel chimed for nine o’clock. Johnny shut his eyes and sighed. “Let’s shut the windows tonight. I can’t bear the screams.”
