“What exactly did you lose?” I could tell it made her uncomfortable to speak the words. But how could I find that which can’t be described, surely?
“A letter,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
“A…letter?” I repeated. More a question than a statement. “My dear, you mistake me for someone with time to care about missing papers. My time is worth far more than that!”
“Is it worth this?” As she placed it carefully on the desk I knew I’d take her case.
