The songbird waits upon its perch for the morning guardsman to wind her key. Every morning she remains still. Her mechanisms stopped till dawn breaks. She hears the faithful footfalls of the guardsman. He is late. He turns the large butterfly shaped key. Once. Twice. Three times. He forgets to turn it a fourth time.
The bird begins to sing. Slowly opening and closing its wings. Her eyes are crazed and frightened. Her song is not a happy one. The guardsman looks alarmed. The crowds begin to gather. But they don’t clap and cheer. They throw stones. Cover their ears.
