“Momma, what’s that over there?” I knew better than to ask her questions when we were at the market. This was a time for negotiating food our family needed and my job was to carry, not to speak. But the gathered crowd caught my attention.
“Nothin’ child. That’s just the Watermelon Lady. And we don’t need no watermelon,” she answered, grabbing my free arm and dragging me to the next stall selling bread.
“But I like watermelon—” She fixed me with a gaze I’d never seen before.
“We can’t afford what we like. We buys what we needs to survive.”
