From their window they watched a bolt of lightning hit the tree across the street then split in half. The news said not to panic and now it’s too late. All roads are flooded and closed to traffic. Where they are is where they must stay for safety.
Another bolt hit their car, setting it on fire as the torrential rain began to fall. The couple stood at their window, in each other’s arms, watching the raindrops gather and rise.
“At least we have an excuse not to attend that party tonight,” she said and they laughed till they cried.
