She sharpened the knife with precision. A skill she picked up after years of slicing his apples and his meat and his bread; just so. She also became an expert at not getting hit.
With each swipe of the blade against her sharpening tool she thought of all the ways he’s treated her. The sound of metal against metal intensifying.
She heard the car door slam. Remained perfectly still. Then the keys in the front door. Open. Close.
“What’s for dinner?” he asked. Her grip tightened around the knife at his touch.
