The black curtains parted on a puppet show. A woman weeping on a log in the forest beneath a moon rising high in the sky, shining light upon her golden hair. Out of the forest came a man, whistling, and happy.
When he saw the woman weeping he stopped and put a hand on her shoulder, for he was mute and couldn’t speak. She raised her head slowly, her eyes deep crimson.
The audience, a mix of adults and children, gasped. “Run, mister!” Shouted one of them.
But it was too late. The curtains closed slowly on the whistling woman.
