The vines climbed the walls on all sides of the house while the family slept soundly in their upstairs bedroom. Twins Betty and Bobby dreamt about rainbows and lollipops like children often do. While mom and dad tossed and turned with nightmares about bug invasions and exploding appliances, like adults with responsibilities often do.
And still the vines climbed. Forcing windows open slowly they crept inside and down across the hardwood floors. The beating heart of the home pounding out a rhythm to wake those sleeping soundly in their beds.
But no one stirred when the black roses turned crimson.
