TRANSCRIPT

The candlewick sputtered, fighting to stay lit in the suffocating dark. Eleanor leaned closer, shielding the fragile flame with trembling hands. Each time it faltered, the shadows crept closer—stretching, reaching, bending towards her.

She tried to remember how many candles she’d lit when she began. Five? Six? The melted stubs around her feet said otherwise—dozens, maybe hundreds. She struck another match, but the wick refused to catch. Her heartbeat filled the silence. Then, from behind her, a soft breath extinguished the last candle.

Eleanor didn’t scream. She couldn’t. The dark had been waiting too long for her voice.
