I survey the study one last time. My eyes never deceive me in matters related to the cleanliness of Mr. Hardway’s study. He demands this room, above all others, should be free from dust. And—
My eyes look up, hearing his footfalls in his bedroom directly above and follow them towards the doorway. He’ll be descending the stairs right about now! I slip out the side door quietly, unnoticed. I was never here.
I’ve no idea what Mr. Hardway does for a living. But he pays me enough not to ask questions about the mess I’m confronted with most nights.
