The other woman knew more than I did. And that wasn’t how I liked to solve things. I let her finish talking with Detective Silvers while I pretended disinterest in her ravings on the other side of the two-way mirror.

“Suspect or waste of time?” I asked myself. Assuming I was alone. I wasn’t alone. When the chief’s daughter is the victim in an investigation, no one is ever alone anymore. “You shouldn’t be here.”

“She knows more than she’s telling us. Why aren’t you in there getting the answers out of her?”

“I can’t give you what you want.”
