Borrowed from
’s Top 10 stories of 2024, I wanted to share my top 10 of the year. Now, I wrestled with doing a top 10 of fiction, top 10 of non-fiction, and then top 10 of my 100 word stories. But then it would really be a top 30 and that is too many things to share. So, instead, I’ve got a few different ways that I decided to divide my list. Anything here that is behind a paywall will be made FREE-TO-READ so everyone can read it.Let’s start with the thing that people know me for whenever they hear my name or see my work out in the wild, and that’s my 100 word stories. Here are my Top 5 based on Likes and Comments:
Brownies #457 [7/30/24] - Using various Tarot decks to write 100 word stories is something I’ve been doing for quite some time and in this case, I was using a deck that combined The Wizard of Oz with Alice in Wonderland. Here we have the moment when Alice encounters the Blue Caterpillar, who represents a sense of calm and highness that could only be matched with an equally high batch of brownies.
A World of Difference #247 [1/2/24] - Having an out of body experience is one thing. Writing about myself in the third person and then bringing it full circle to breaking the fourth wall and talking directly to the reader is another.
Static #264 [1/19/24] - I love old timey radio programs and actively seek them out on podcasts. Something about the static, crackle, and pops that are heard during each episode that takes me back. I was not born in that era but I often wonder what that must’ve been like. The “TV” of the day was spent sitting by the radio.
Perchance to Dream #270 [1/25/24] - When I think about the Twilight Zone, this episode is one that I would consider in my top 10 of favorites. The madness that comes from feeling like we can never sleep is fascinating to me and one I long to understand better.
Dust #263 [1/18/24] - Capital “D” Death is often explored on the Twilight Zone. Death takes on many forms and can mean many different things to different people but one thing remains constant; Death is an inevitability that no one can avoid no matter how hard they may try. Death will always find a way in.
Now onto the other fiction I’ve written this year. Turns out, I don’t just write 100 word stories. I actually write short stories and even serials! And in 2024 I had several short stories to choose from but when it came to choosing my favorite, that was easy!
I’ve got a few “non-fiction” posts as well from this year. I’ve scaled back a lot when it comes to writing non-fiction stuff here. Just because I really want to focus my time on writing fiction. But I do know how helpful some of my non-fiction posts are to people and so I’m not getting rid of writing them entirely in 2025. So, here are two posts that did the best with readers and still gets Likes and Comments every now and then:
5 Great Ways to Lose Your Audience
For the majority of us in the Fiction Community here on Substack (or anywhere that a group of people writing fiction gather), I am sure these are obvious. But there are those select few who are eithe…
Aside from the work I do on my main publication, I’m also putting a lot of time and effort into Top in Fiction, a place for fiction writers to showcase their fiction to readers. And recently TiF had its first ever “Disruption” post that did so well it was recognized and shared by Substack themselves in their weekly Substack Reads post!
And now for my personal favorite post of 2024. This is my favorite because, for a time, I was totally invested in this type of storytelling. But life got in the way and I stopped. I wanted to share it though because I hope to bring back the passion I had for it once. So, enough of the suspense!
