If you are a lover of books, specifically UK books, then you know of Book Depository. When I first discovered it back in 2017 it was my lifeline to so many UK books I craved but could never find on Amazon. I just love the unique designs that UK covers have over US covers.
What is Book Depository? Simple. It was an online book store that sold UK published books at really bargain prices. I considered it like the Amazon of the UK. But what made it even more special was the fact that the shipping to the US was free. Didn’t matter if I ordered one book or ten books, regardless of the price of my order, the books always shipped free.
I first heard that it was shutting down when I do what I always do whenever I’m looking for a book, I went to the website in search of a book just to see if the design would be better than the US version, and was faced with the news right on the main page:
And just like that, I felt my world crashing around me. Even now as I look on my bookshelf, I can see so many books that came from Book Depository:
Complete collection of paperback Disc World by Terry Pratchett
First 7 books of the Flavia de Luce mystery series by Alan Bradley
Complete Philip Reeve Mortal Engine series
Richard Osman books
Agatha Christie books
Complete Isaac Asimov collection
Harry Potter UK version of every boxed set
I could go on and on.
I think what crushes me most are the books where I’m still collecting them. Richard Osman’s latest book, I need in paperback and it’s not out yet. The same with Alan Bradley’s books. I was in the middle of collecting a hardcover set of Terry Pratchett’s books that were special editions.
The only option I see open to me is Waterstones. Basically, the Barnes & Noble of the UK. The price is a bit higher and I don’t think shipping to the US is free. And will I still have that excited feeling I used to have with Book Depository? Only time will tell.
In the meantime, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this closure? Are you in mourning as I am? What books have you purchased from Book Depository?
