My Extensive Scrivener Process

A recording from Erica Drayton's live video

I’ve been using Scrivener since 2013. I know this because I bought it the year I participated in and completed NaNoWriMo for the first time. Having the incentive of getting Scrivener for 50% off was good enough for me to want to soldier on that year. The story was called “Murder on the A” and was meant to be a series of mystery books set around the time the MTA was expanding the NYC subway system. Never published it though that wasn’t the point really.

The first time I used Scrivener was to begin cataloguing the rather lengthy “Series Bible” for my fantasy universe; Stonehaven. I was a novice at the time and didn’t really know (yet) how to use it to actually write my manuscript. In the early days I was just using it for research purposes.

After years of fighting with it I finally taught myself the finer points of using its Compose capabilities. If you’ve never used it before, trust me, it’s not for the faint of heart.

There here Scrivener VOD is about as extensive as I am willing to go with sharing how I use Scrivener. I realize people may tout it as the gold standard for fiction writers, or any writer wishing to be a “pro” to use. But I’m here to say, whatever helps you get words on the page and stay organized is all that counts and that might not be Scrivener. In short, it’s not for everyone and yes, it can be intimidating. It still intimidates me over a decade later!
